VCE and HSC Tutoring Programs: How Operators Structure Subjects, Tutors and Exam Periods

How should a tutoring company structure VCE and HSC tutoring programs?

Build VCE tutoring around the subjects you can staff with strong tutors, and treat exam season as a time to ask your existing tutors for more hours, not a time to hire. At EquateIt, our VCE core is Mathematical Methods, English and Chemistry. My experience is VCE. I have not run HSC tutoring, so the HSC section below is general guidance from NESA, not EquateIt experience.

Which VCE subjects should you offer?

Start with the subjects that matter most to students. For us, that is Mathematical Methods, English and Chemistry. They matter for many careers, so they are very important to do well in.

Whatever your core subjects are, a subject is only really on your menu if you have a tutor who can teach it well. If you are building the team, see where to recruit tutors. Pricing each subject is a separate decision, covered in how to price tutoring services.

How do you decide when to add a new subject?

Look at two things: the demand and requests you are getting, and whether any of your tutors can teach it. A subject families keep asking for is a good sign. A subject nobody on your team can teach is not a subject yet, it is a recruiting job. Add it when the requests are real and the tutor exists.

What changes in SAC and exam periods?

Not much. Nothing really changes in our operation during SAC and exam periods. We do not hire more tutors for them. If we need more capacity, we ask our existing tutors for more availability.

You can see the pressure points coming. School-assessed coursework (SACs) is how schools assess Units 3 and 4, according to the VCAA, and the end-of-year dates are published in the VCAA examination timetable. In 2026 the written exams run from Tuesday 27 October to Wednesday 18 November. English is on 27 October, Mathematical Methods Exam 1 and Exam 2 are on 5 and 6 November, and Chemistry is on 10 November. Match those dates against your students’ subjects, then ask your tutors early who has spare hours.

What about the HSC?

The HSC is a different system, run by NSW’s education standards authority, NESA. I have not run HSC tutoring or operated in NSW, so treat this as general guidance, not experience.

VCE (Victoria) HSC (NSW)
Run by VCAA NESA
Structure Units 1 and 2, then Units 3 and 4 Preliminary and HSC courses
2026 written exams 27 October to 18 November (VCAA) 13 October to 5 November (NESA)

If you operate in NSW, check the NESA site for your subjects, and don’t assume your VCE tutor pool, subject mix or calendar will carry across. ClassQuill handles scheduling, billing and progress reporting for any subject, but its built-in curriculum is VCE and the national curriculum, not the NSW syllabus, so plan on supplying your own HSC resources.

Where does ClassQuill fit?

ClassQuill’s weakness tracking shows a tutor which topics a student keeps getting wrong, and the built-in VCE curriculum means those topics can be named the same way across tutors. For a catch-up block before the school year starts, see school-holiday tutoring programs.

Pick the subjects you can staff, add one only when a tutor can teach it, and when exams arrive ask the tutors you already have.
