Handwritten working gets marked line by line
Students write their working on the whiteboard the way they'd write it on paper. Each step is read and marked in its own right, so a student who set the problem up correctly and slipped at the end keeps the method marks — the way a real examiner would award them.
Paper working? Photograph it with their phone
Plenty of students still think on paper, and they shouldn't have to retype it. A QR code on screen, one photo from their phone, and the page they actually worked on lands in the answer and gets marked — no app to install, no emailing a picture to their tutor.
One wrong number doesn't cost them the next three parts
Multi-part questions are marked the way a real examiner marks them. If a student gets part (a) wrong and then uses that answer correctly in part (b), part (b) is marked against what they carried forward — so they're penalised once for one mistake, not four times. This is the part generic marking tools get wrong, and students notice.
If it marks them wrong, they can say so
No marking is perfect, and pretending otherwise is how students stop trusting it. A student can ask for a re-mark and say what was missed — it re-reads their work properly rather than repeating itself. Every challenge and its outcome is recorded, so you can see whether the marking is holding up instead of taking our word for it.
